One-Punch Man is a curious self-published manga series, which has spawned both a digital manga (Shueisha) remake and anime (Madhouse) series by the same name. Going only by the pseudonym ONE, and starting in 2009, the artist's web-manga quickly rose in popularity. Both the original web-manga and manga are still ongoing, with the anime recently (December 2015) completing its 12 episode first season original run.
The story follows Saitama: a seemingly generic though disproportionately powerful hero, whose single punch can fatally devastate his opponents. This has an obvious psychological affect on the hero, who ponders how his emotions have dwindled as a consequence. The opponents themselves are bizarre parodies/homages to characters of other series, or seeming caricatures of stereotypes found in society. All the while the citizens, of nearby cities known only by single alphabetical letters, are constantly in jeopardy. This all makes for a rather humorous and fun action adventure.
The illustration style of the web-manga is often crude and simplistic, which may have contributed to its popularity. Whilst the manga remake, which can be read in Japanese at the official website, is more comprehensively illustrated by Yusuke Murata. An English print edition is available for purchase too from Viz Media.
A highly recommended title for those looking for something humorous, innovative and fresh.
